Galveston's Newest Landmark: 2202 Mechanic Street
The Galveston City Council recently approved an ordinance granting the building located at 2202 Mechanic Street landmark status. The building pre-dates the 1900 Storm and is approximately 133 years old. It has served generations of Galvestonians as everything from a gathering place for the Knights of Pythias to the home of the Italian Consulate of the Galveston - Houston area to a downtown business establishment.

Galveston Re-leaf: Free Tree Giveaway on November 21st
Free trees will soon be available to Island property owners who lost trees to Ike's salty surge last year. Nearly 2,000 trees will be given away to Galvestonians on Saturday, November 21st, 9am to 4pm.

Clean Your Castle and Participate in the Citywide Clean Up
The City of Galveston is resurrecting its semi-annual citywide clean up on November 13th & 14th and November 20th & 21st. Residents are encouraged to place materials next to their garbage carts by 8:00 a.m. on the collection days scheduled for their area. Any material not picked up on Friday or Saturday will be collected on the regularly scheduled garbage day.

Lone Star Rally Street Closures and City Information
This week Lone Star Rally 2009 will roar back onto Galveston Island. Billed as The World's Largest Halloween Party, the event boasts numerous contests, concerts, attractions, parades, and vendors. The Rally will open on Thursday, October 29th and run through Sunday, November 1st.

City leaders are encouraging Island property owners with dead and dying trees to take advantage of a free removal program before its too late. Trees located on private property that were killed by Hurricane Ike’s salty storm surge may be eligible for removal at no cost.

Galveston Municipal Court Offers Delinquent Offenders Amnesty throughout October
Throughout the month of October the Galveston Municipal Court will grant amnesty to residents and visitors with outstanding criminal citations. Nearly 25,000 warrants have accumulated due to unresolved tickets for Class C Misdemeanors, which include traffic violations, public intoxication, and disorderly conduct. Failure to Appear (FTA) and Violate Promise to Appear (VPTA) fines plus court costs will be dismissed on each offense if full payment of all fines and court costs for the original offense is made.

Ike Wood Now Available for Pick-Up By Artists and Woodworkers
City of Galveston officials are pleased to announce that artists, woodworkers, and the general public can now retrieve pieces of trees removed from Broadway Boulevard for free. Last fall, Ike covered most of the Island in a salty tidal surge that led to the demise of thousands of trees.

Officials Announce Removal of Historic Trees Along Broadway Boulevard to Begin Saturday
Beginning this Saturday, September 26th, dead and dying trees located along Galveston's Broadway Boulevard will be removed. Officials anticipate the project will take one to two weeks to complete. This is the final phase of tree removal along public right-of-ways. Broadway is the Island's central historic thoroughfare. Prior to Hurricane Ike dense tree canopies shaded the entire street on the eastern portion of the boulevard. Many decades old, the trees are considered contributing features to the historic Broadway esplanade and their presence has been a mainstay of the Galveston landscape.
