Summer Fishing

Summer Fishing

Last Updated: July 11, 2019 by Captain Shane Cantrell | Fishing

Summer time in Galveston brings the most variety of fish of the year, despite the sometimes blazing summer heat or thunderstorms. Inshore fishing for redfish and speckled trout is great and offshore fishing for a bunch of species is great too. This is the easiest time to plan a trip and get out on the water as well, no school schedules or sports practices to balance and most hunting seasons are closed as well. The perfect time to make lasting memories with family and friends, spend some great time exploring the island and just unwind living on island time.

The easiest and simplest way to go fishing, is with a guided fishing charter or on a fishing pier. You don’t need anything but snacks, drinks, and a fishing license— then let the guide or pier staff handle the rest. They’ve got the rods and reels, tackle and bait already so you won’t have to worry about that.

Inshore fishing catches typically consist of speckled trout, redfish, flounder— with occasional spanish mackerel and other species as well. Offshore fishing catches consist of red snapper, kingfish (king mackerel), Cobia (Ling), mangrove snapper, amberjack, mani mani and more! The biggest concern and thing to be aware of is the weather, especially in early summer with thunderstorms. Several thunderstorms often develop throughout the day, and can cause some serious safety concerns.

Once you’ve had that great day of fishing, it’s time to relax and enjoy some fresh seafood. There are a few of local restaurants that will cook your catch or serve great, local seafood as well. Don’t forget to share your great fishing experience in Galveston with your friends as well.
