About
From the time UTMB Health was established as the state’s first medical school in 1891, the university has trained more health care professionals than any other Texas academic health center. UTMB Health is now in an era of unprecedented growth, with continually expanding enrollment in its schools of Medicine, Nursing, Health Professions and Graduate Biomedical Sciences.
UTMB Health has been at the forefront of health care advancements in Galveston, throughout Texas and around the world. With
internationally renowned programs in infectious diseases and vaccine development, UTMB Health is home to the Galveston National Laboratory and the Sealy Institute for Vaccine Sciences.
To accommodate its unparalleled growth and help address critical health care workforce shortages in Texas and beyond, UTMB Health recently completed a new Health Education Center in 2019. The $90.4 million facility supports interprofessional education to ensure UTMB Health graduates are well prepared to work as part of a health care team, and it features advanced simulation technology to help students hone their skills in a low-risk, high-realism environment.
Through innovative curricula, hands-on learning and an emphasis on working together as an interprofessional team, UTMB Health is training the health care leaders of tomorrow, and advancing the institution’s mission — to improve health for the people of Texas and around the world — over the next 125 years and beyond.
