Quest for the Best Chips, Salsa and Guacamole
With such a variety of delicious salsas, guacs, and chips available on Galveston Island it would take a 10 page article to do them all justice. So today we are going to highlight just a few of the local favorites:
The Original Mexican Cafe
Traditional is the word to describe the salsa and guacamole at The Original Mexican Cafe. This salsa is not of the the chunky style but a thinner yet very flavor-full salsa with just the right amount of spices and heat that goes well with the very thin tortilla chips. I recommend an Original Mexican Cafe’s margarita to go along with this complimentary snack while waiting for your main entree. Locals often order a pint of salsa and a bag of chips to go. The Original prides itself on beginning each morning with the freshest of quality ingredients and you can definitely taste the quality with their salsa and guacamole.
Texadelphia
Fresh, thick, chunky and with a hint of sweetness, Texadelphia has a hidden winner with their salsa. The salsa and tortilla chips are included with your Philly-style steak hoagie. They make gallons of this delicious manna fresh every day. Their guacamole is a great topping choice for your steak sandwich. Once again, you’ll see locals order a pint of salsa to go.
Taquilo's Tex-Mex Cantina
Unusual, and not your typical salsas. Taquilo’s offers two complimentary salsas, red and white. The red salsa is served warm and has very ‘tomato-ey’ flavor that I can only describe as a sort of ‘Southwest Marinara’, if you please. The white is a creamy, guac, spinach and sour cream delight. Neither sauce dips are thick nor thin, but have a smooth gravy-like consistency. Note: Patrons can be seen spooning these salsas over their entree’s. The Guacamole is fresh and served with nearly every entree.
